  • Pancreas can be evaluated using ultrasound and is a useful modality for assessing pancreatitis (acute and chronic) as well as tumors.
  • Urinary bladder and prostate can be evaluated with sonography. Common pathologies like cystitis and urinary bladder calculi can be evaluated. Prostate can be evaluated for old age group people. Post-void residual urine (PVR) can also be checked to complete the diagnosis.
  • Sonography is also an effective tool for screening of bowel pathologies, esp. abnormal bowel wall thickening and ileo-caecal Koch’s.
  • Appendix is very well visualized in case of acute appendicitis.
  • Any free peritoneal fluid is well picked up on ultrasound and ascites can be quantified. It’s role is crucial in cases of peritonitis and chronic liver disease.
  • In cases of trauma, FAST abdominal ultrasound is very effective for detecting hemoperitoneum and assessing severity of abdominal trauma.
  • In children, abdominal scan is done to assess any significant mesenteric lymph nodes.
