What is an Ultrasound Scan?
Ultrasound (Sonography) is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of internal organs, tissues, and blood flow.
Unlike X-rays or CT scans, ultrasound does not use radiation, making it extremely safe—even for sensitive cases such as pregnancy.
It is widely used for evaluating soft tissues, abdominal organs, and fetal development, offering immediate and dynamic imaging.

Obstetrics & Gynecology
- Pregnancy localization and assessing cardiac activity.
- Rule out ectopic pregnancy

- To rule out any structural / genetic fetal anomalies. Level 1 / NTNB scan is done at 11-13 weeks. Level II scan / TIFFA scan/ Anomaly scan is done at 18-22 weeks.
Abdomen & Pelvis
- Detailed evaluation of liver and its common pathologies, including fatty liver, liver abscess, liver damage / cirrhosis / tumors etc. Portal vein can be assessed to check for portal hypertension. Biliary radicles can be assessed for cases of obstructive jaundice.
- Gall bladder is best assessed with sonography. GB stone / calculi and other pathologies like cholecystitis, adenomyomatosis, tumors etc can be evaluated.
- Detailed evaluation of kidneys can be done including size and morphology. Common pathologies like renal calculi, hydronephrosis, renal damage / medical renal disease / CKD can be evaluated.
- Pancreas can be evaluated using ultrasound and is a useful modality for assessing pancreatitis (acute and chronic) as well as tumors.
- Urinary bladder and prostate can be evaluated with sonography. Common pathologies like cystitis and urinary bladder calculi can be evaluated. Prostate can be evaluated for old age group people. Post-void residual urine (PVR) can also be checked to complete the diagnosis.
- Sonography is also an effective tool for screening of bowel pathologies, esp. abnormal bowel wall thickening and ileo-caecal Koch’s.
- Appendix is very well visualized in case of acute appendicitis.
- Any free peritoneal fluid is well picked up on ultrasound and ascites can be quantified. It’s role is crucial in cases of peritonitis and chronic liver disease.
- In cases of trauma, FAST abdominal ultrasound is very effective for detecting hemoperitoneum and assessing severity of abdominal trauma.
- In children, abdominal scan is done to assess any significant mesenteric lymph nodes.
Neck Ultrasound
- Very important for assessing and characterizing thyroid swelling / nodules. Its role is very crucial in assessing the character, size, extent and vascularity of thyroid nodule and helps in further management.
- Blood flow analysis in carotid arteries and jugular veins. Important role in cases of chronic headache, stroke, migraine or any focal movement disorders.
- Assessing of sub-mandibular area to assess adenitis, submandibular calculi, lymph nodes and any focal collection / inflammation.
- Assessing parotid glands for any pathology / tumors.

Ultrasound Procedure
- The patient is requested to change clothing (if required)
- The patient then sits / lies comfortably on an examination table.
- A water-based gel is applied to the skin of the desired area under examination
- A handheld device (transducer) is moved over the area and patient is asked to move according to obtain suitable images.
