An electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is a quick, non-invasive test that records the heart’s electrical activity. It translates the electrical impulses that control the heart’s rhythm and pumping action into a visible line tracing on paper or a screen, helping doctors identify heart attacks, arrhythmias, and structural abnormalities.
The Procedure
Echocardiography (2D Echo)
An echocardiogram (Echo) is a non-invasive, painless procedure involving ultrasound of the heart. It uses high-frequency sound waves to generate real-time, and records moving images of the heart’s chambers, valves, and blood flow. Doctors use it to measure pumping strength, detect structural defects, and evaluate overall cardiac function.
2D & 3D Echo modalities are available which produce cross-sectional or volumetric pictures of the heart’s moving anatomy. Along with doppler ultrasound, it evaluates the speed, direction, and characteristics of blood flow to check for valve leaks or blockages.
Procedure:
Transthoracic Echocardiogram (TTE) is the most commonly done echo. The patient is asked to lie down with slight tilt towards left side. The cardiologist performs the scan himself after applying ultrasound gel to the chest. They move the transducer across different angles to capture / record images. It takes about 10-20 minutes varying on case-to-case basis.
