An MRI with contrast involves the administration of a contrast agent (commonly gadolinium-based), usually injected intravenously, to enhance the visibility of specific tissues and structures.

However, basic recently done KFTs are mandatory before IV contrast injection. Though less likely, side effects include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, itching and skin rashes.

  1. The patient is briefed about the procedure including entering into the magnetic tunnel and duration of scan. He/she is asked to remove all metallic objects (jewelry, watches, hairpins, belts). Any history of pacemaker, medical implants, metallic stents / devices placed within the body must be discussed and written.
  2. The patient is positioned on a motorized examination table
  3. The table moves into the MRI scanner, which is a cylindrical (tunnel-like) machine
  4. The scanner generates a magnetic field and radio waves to capture images
  5. The patient must remain completely still to ensure image clarity
  6. The machine may produce rhythmic tapping or buzzing sounds (ear protection is provided)
  7. In case of contrast MRI, the contrast agent is administered intravenously during the scan. Fasting (4-5 hours is recommended) and prior KFT needs to be checked
  8. Since the scan duration is ~20 minutes with patient lying in tunnel with high noises, there is possibility of development of anxiety due to closed spaces, which is more pronounced in cases of claustrophobia. There are safety measures developed for the same.
  9. For small children, claustrophobic patients, people who are not able to lie still for longer duration, there is always an option to do such cases under light sedation or in general anesthesia with the help of dedicated team of anesthetists.
