Computed Tomography (CT scan) is an advanced non-invasive diagnostic imaging technique that uses X-rays combined with computer technology to produce detailed cross-sectional images of the body.
Unlike standard X-rays, a CT scan provides layered (slice-by-slice) images, allowing doctors to examine bones, organs, blood vessels, and soft tissues with good clarity and precision, along with multiplanar and 3D processing techniques.

What is a CT scan with Contrast?
A contrast-enhanced CT scan involves the use of a special contrast dye (iodine-based) that is injected intravenously. Oral contrast / contrast enema may be needed in addition.
This contrast agent helps in:

CT Scan Procedure
- The patient is briefed about the procedure including lying within CT gantry. He/she is asked to remove all metallic objects(jewelry, watches, hairpins, belts) which can cause artefacts.
- The patient lies on the scanning table
- The table moves through a circular CT gantry
- The scanner rotates around the body, capturing multiple X-ray images
- These images are processed into detailed cross-sectional views
- The procedure is quick, painless, and non-invasive
- You may be asked to hold your breath briefly for clearer images
- In contrast scans, dye is administered before or during the scan
- This procedure has exposure of high doses of ionizing radiation which can affect pregnant woman / developing fetus. Thus, this is not recommended for pregnant women. Though with advance technology, the radiation dose can be reduced without affecting image quality.
Preparation for CT scan
- For non-contrast CT scan, usually done for assessment of brain, chest (HRCT), sinuses, renal stones etc, no specific preparation is needed.
- For contrast CT scans. Fasting is recommended for 4–6 hours and recent kidney function tests must be available
- Remove all metal objects
- Inform your doctor if you have:
- Allergy to contrast dye
- Kidney problems
- Diabetes or thyroid conditions
- Pregnancy or planning of pregnancy in the same month
- Wear comfortable clothing
